The Cedar is honored in many Native American traditions as a sacred plant. Its uses were many. The long fibrous strips of bark have been used in making baskets, blankets, ropes and mats. The wood itself was often burned for use in sacred ceremonies and used for dugout canoes, shelters, and frames for nets and other utensils.
The owl is symbolic of special magical powers, and while revered by some, it has been feared by others. Because of its nocturnal habits, the owl has been called the Night Eagle in some traditions. It is a symbol of wisdom, because it can see when others cannot. The Saw-Whet Owl, a small owl found across North America, is represented on this hand painted Nature Spirit drum.
